Hayakawa (1906-1992), a professor of English and general semantics before he became a U.S. senator, to describe highly connotative language that often serves as a substitute for serious thought and well-reasoned argument. An Argument Versus Debate An argument is not a fight — or at least it shouldnt be. Rhetorically speaking, an argument is a course of reasoning aimed at demonstrating that a statement is either true or false. In todays media, however, it often appears that rational argument has been usurped by scaremongering and fact-free bluster. Yelling, crying, and name-calling have taken the place of thoughtfully reasoned debate. In Language in Thought and Action* (first published in 1941, last revised in 1991), S.I. Hayakawa observes that public discussions of contentious issues commonly degenerate into slanging matches and shouting fests — presymbolic noises disguised as language: This error is especially common in the interpretation of utterances of orators and editorialists in some of their more excited denunciations of leftists, fascists, Wall Street, right-wingers, and in their glowing support of our way of life. Constantly, because of the impressive sound of the words, the elaborate structure of the sentences, and the appearance of intellectual progression, we get the feeling that something is being said about something. On closer examination, however, we discover that these utterances really say What I hate (liberals, Wall Street), I hate very, very much, and What I like (our way of life), I like very, very much. We may call such utterances snarl-words and purr-words. The urge to convey our feelings about a subject may actually stop judgment, Hayakawa says, rather than foster any kind of meaningful debate: Such statements have less to do with reporting the outside world than they do with our inadvertently reporting the state of our internal world; they are the human equivalents of snarling and purring. . . . Issues like gun control, abortion, capital punishment, and elections often lead us to resort to the equivalent of snarl-words and purr-words. . . . To take sides on such issues phrased in such judgmental ways is to reduce communication to a level of stubborn imbecility. First it should be made known that most organizations are a way of fitting in with people of similar interests, views, or goals. Most organization, no matter how democratic, will always have some kind of leader over the rest. In instances of many leaders one will always be above the rest. These leaders will have more power, influence, and respect then the others. No matter how erratic their decisions are, their are always people that will follow or risk of being different, ultimately not fitting in. The fear of loneliness or rejection will always clump together the masses. Organizations are a way of showing or pretending to be like others as an effort to fit in or risk being one's true self for fearing to be rejected by society. In the novel A Separate Peace Finny and Gene's relationship shows most if not all the signs of a organization. Finny seems as in control as any leader would be in a organization. He even takes the first step of starting it by saying, He and Gene are best of friends now. This statement confirms that he initiated the friendship. As a normal person Gene was sure at first if he would accept Finny's friendship, but after evaluating he's benefits as part of the population he accepts the friendship. Gene seemed to have tested Finny's qualities before offering his friendship to see if Finny was good enough by seeing if he was willing to jump from a tree. This would show Finny if he was willing to trust him and if he would do things that Finny wanted him to. The tree jumping would also prove to be the joining procedure to the Summer Suicide Society they would later create and head. After the offer for friendship by Finny, Finny and Gene got involved in a wrestling match with each other. This like many organizations is like rough housing to show belonging or just affection. Another sign of their group would be the pajamas that Gene decides to wear because Finny does. This was again something Gene hesitates to do, but does as a way of showing belonging. This symbolizes to them and the population similar physical attributes that show their circle. The police are a way of comparing their organization or that of the Gene and Finny's. First off their is a way of joining the police. Their is much training involved both physical and mental. They are trained to shoot when they have to and do it without hesitation, very much like Finny does things that Gene want's him to do. Physically they will gain a higher level of conditioning to gain respect and to do their job. The beginners in each organization will be frowned upon until their respect is earned much like how Finny tested Gene with the tree. After the respect is earned more privileged things are gained through the circle. They also wear uniforms as a way to show the world that they are alike similar to Finny and Gene wearing the pajamas. The rookies of the police will in hopes work their way to a prominent rank in order to seem more important then the rest. Gene seemed to be on the receiving end of the relationship until they decide to open their group to the others. When that occurred, Gene seem much more confident in this thought patterns. Organization such as the police and that of Gene and Finny's aren't bad, but a way that shows the characters of the person in control. Many organizations will do good while others do bad. It all depends on the ruler and more importantly the ruled. If the ruled is willing and weak they will follow the ruler at all costs. That is why I ask you ladies and gentlemen for you to stand up against bullying with me. This can happen to anyone primarily targeted simply because of their race, body size, sexual orientation, or any type of difference not accepted or judged by a group or a person.Bullying consists of different disturbances; physical, verbal, indirect, and cyber bullying. Physical bullying is considered any physical attack; kicking, punching, shoving, taking or damaging belongings. Verbal bulling consists of name calling, insulting, making racist, sexist or homophobic comments, remarks or teasing, just to name a few. I ndirect and cyber bullying go hand in hand when nasty, hurtful, rumors are spread behind a person’s back, now most common through any electronic media. Watch your thoughts, they become words. Watch your words, they become actions. Watch your actions, they become habits.Watch your habits, they become character. A character in which you will be defined as a helping hand, a bully, or the one being bullied. America should be a country where everyone can feel safe in which ever environment from public places, to school, to work. One out of seven students from kindergarten to twelfth grade is either a bully or a victim of bullying, and it is estimated that 160,000 students miss school every day due to fear of an attack. Would you want that fear to spread to someone close to you or yourself? In stage 1 of Greiner’s model of organizational growth, ‘growth through creativity’, ‘the norms and values of the organizational culture, rather than the hierarchy and organizational structure, control people’s behavior’ (Jones, 2010, p. 315). For Microsoft, the control and evaluation systems were likely driven directly by Bill Gates and Paul Allen, where Bill reviewed continued programming as well as leadership during the first five years of the business. In stage 2 ‘Growth through direction’ Microsoft partnered with IBM to provide its PC-DOS operating system to the IBM PC (â€Å"Bill Gates,† February 18, 2012, p. 1). Performance was likely directly tied to the revenue of the product the team was contributing too, and likely evenly distributed. This is typically the case when the company is thriving. So too, the ‘crisis of control’ that accompanies this stage led to the performance management changes that caused difficulty for the Vista release, political stress, and deterioration of team dynamics (Jones, 2010, p. 330). For stage 4 ‘growth through coordination’, Senior Leadership likely stepped in to reassume control and evaluate the situation to make appropriate corrections to get back on track. I lived in Washington State at that time and had many colleagues that worked at Microsoft. As the text states, Microsoft was very secretive about its information, but I do know that there was a significant amount of reorganization and attrition that accompanied whatever changes they made during that time. There was extensive emphasis placed on getting the following product releases out the door in timely fashion, and although there appeared to be an elevated amount of bugs in the release, timelines did improve. 2.Microsoft today is most likely in the growth through collaboration stage. How do you recommend it changes its structure, culture, and control systems to solve its problems at this stage? At this stage in Greiner’s model ‘growth through collaboration’, Microsoft should begin to focus efforts for more coordination between levels of the organization. The product team structure that Microsoft utilizes should stay intact, but the management action with teams should be less rigid and more supporting. Time to market and customer needs are paramount, and policy and process must accommodate quick response in support of these goals. The small team structure that made Microsoft the great company it is should be maintained. This composition supports an organic organizational structure that is advised at this stage to be fully effective and keep costs low. Microsoft has transitioned through Greiner’s model of organizational growth and amassed billions in profit despite standard periods of crisis. This shows that the organizational structure and culture of Microsoft is one of strength and discipline to make adjustments as needed to continue its dominance in the marketplace. And as organizations change, the culture and its employees must adjust as well. Many innovative businesses have been spun off or benefitted from those employees that decided not to stay. Today’s commercials are more sophisticated and pervasive, it is not that the products are good or bad, it is the notion of manipulating children to buy the product. Children are not little adults and their minds are not fully developed, still marketers are playing to their developmental vulnerability. The advertising that children are exposed to today is honed by psychologist and is enhanced by media technologies (Clay, 2000).
